RetypePDF compared to iLovePDF
Narrower on purpose: one job, done without your document leaving the device.
iLovePDF covers a wide range of document jobs โ merging, splitting, compressing, converting, watermarking, page numbering. This does one of them, and only one: changing the text that is already in a PDF.
Where it differs. iLovePDF processes your file on its servers, which is what lets it offer that breadth. RetypePDF does the work in your browser instead, which rules out most of those features and buys one thing in exchange: the document is never transmitted. Open the Network tab and watch โ nothing carrying your file goes out.
On editing specifically. The text is rewritten in the page's content stream, so old words leave the file rather than being hidden under a white box. Copy the text out of the result and the original wording is not there, which is not true of an edit made by covering.
What iLovePDF does better: everything outside text editing, plus OCR for scanned documents, which cannot be done in a browser tab and which this tool honestly refuses.
How it works
- Open your PDF. It loads straight into the browser. No upload, no queue, no account.
- Click the line you want to change. Every editable line is detected and clickable. Type the new text over it.
- Download. The result is a normal PDF โ selectable text, no watermark, same file size.
Real text editing, not a white box
Most free online PDF editors fake it. They draw a white rectangle over the words you wanted to change and print new text on top. It looks fine until you put it on a coloured background, or until somebody selects the text and finds the original wording still sitting underneath.
RetypePDF rewrites the text operators inside the PDF itself. The old words are genuinely gone โ not hidden, not covered. The page stays vector text you can search and select, and the file does not balloon in size.
- Original text still extractable
- Visible patch on shaded backgrounds
- Text becomes unsearchable
- File grows
- Old text actually removed
- No patch, any background
- Stays selectable and searchable
- Size essentially unchanged
Your file never leaves your device
Editing runs entirely in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded, not stored on a server, and not readable by us โ which matters, because the documents people actually need to fix are invoices, contracts, payslips and statements. The only thing our server ever receives is a count of how many documents you processed, so your daily allowance can be tracked.
There is exactly one exception, and you control it: if a result comes out wrong you can send us a problem report. That never happens automatically. Reports carry only a technical summary by default โ no text from your document โ and including the document itself is a separate box you tick each time.

Questions
How does this compare to iLovePDF?
It is far narrower and does not upload. iLovePDF covers merging, splitting, compressing, converting, watermarking and more, all processed on its servers. This edits the text inside a PDF, in your browser, and transmits nothing.
Can I edit PDF text on iLovePDF?
It offers an editor, but like most such tools it works by adding new elements over the page rather than rewriting the text already in it. The distinction shows when you copy text out of the result, or view it on a coloured background. Here the original words are removed from the file rather than covered.
Which should I use?
iLovePDF for anything that is not text editing, and especially for scanned documents, which need OCR that a browser tab cannot do. This one when the document should not be uploaded, or when you want the text genuinely replaced rather than hidden.
Free. 20 documents a day, no account, no watermark โ and if you need more, we ask for a sentence of feedback rather than a payment.
Batch find & replace
Define the replacements once, apply them to every document. Nothing is uploaded โ each file is processed in this browser.
