A free PDF editor that is actually free
Edit the text in a PDF for free. No account, no watermark, no trial that expires.
Search for a free PDF editor and most of what you find is free until the moment it matters. Free to upload, free to edit, then a watermark across the page, a trial that has quietly expired, or a card form standing between you and your own document.
This one is free at the download too. Twenty documents a day, no account, no watermark, and the output is byte-for-byte your file with only the text you changed different. There is no paid tier for the free one to be a worse version of — nothing here is sold.
What it edits: the real text inside the page, rewritten in the content stream rather than covered with a white rectangle. The result stays selectable and searchable, and does not break on a coloured background the way a patched-over edit does.
Where the limit is: past twenty documents in a day, you are asked for one sentence about how it worked for you, and the rest of the day is unlocked. That is the whole business model. Feedback is what this project is short of, not money.
How it works
- Open your PDF. It loads straight into the browser. No upload, no queue, no account.
- Click the line you want to change. Every editable line is detected and clickable. Type the new text over it.
- Download. The result is a normal PDF — selectable text, no watermark, same file size.
Real text editing, not a white box
Most free online PDF editors fake it. They draw a white rectangle over the words you wanted to change and print new text on top. It looks fine until you put it on a coloured background, or until somebody selects the text and finds the original wording still sitting underneath.
RetypePDF rewrites the text operators inside the PDF itself. The old words are genuinely gone — not hidden, not covered. The page stays vector text you can search and select, and the file does not balloon in size.
- Original text still extractable
- Visible patch on shaded backgrounds
- Text becomes unsearchable
- File grows
- Old text actually removed
- No patch, any background
- Stays selectable and searchable
- Size essentially unchanged
Your file never leaves your device
Editing runs entirely in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded, not stored on a server, and not readable by us — which matters, because the documents people actually need to fix are invoices, contracts, payslips and statements. The only thing our server ever receives is a count of how many documents you processed, so your daily allowance can be tracked.
There is exactly one exception, and you control it: if a result comes out wrong you can send us a problem report. That never happens automatically. Reports carry only a technical summary by default — no text from your document — and including the document itself is a separate box you tick each time.

Questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes, including at the download. Twenty documents a day with no account, no watermark and no trial period. There is no paid tier at all, so there is no better version being held back — past the daily limit you are asked for one sentence about how the tool worked, not for money.
Why do other free PDF editors add a watermark?
Because the watermark is the product: it is what makes you pay to remove it. That model needs a paid tier to sell, and this has none. The file you download here differs from the one you opened only in the text you changed.
What can a free PDF editor not do?
This one cannot edit scanned documents, because a scan is an image with no text to rewrite, and it cannot reflow paragraphs — replacement text keeps the original line's position. It also refuses any edit whose characters the embedded font cannot draw, rather than printing blank boxes. For OCR, forms, signatures or page layout you need something broader.
Free. 20 documents a day, no account, no watermark — and if you need more, we ask for a sentence of feedback rather than a payment.
